Really liked this book.I used 3 study guides to earn my PHR. Best part of this one- the laws were really laid out thoroughly whereas the other two skimmed the "important parts" to remember. The best way to remember for me was to know the whole story.
I definitely recommend this book but not as a primary study tool. I was able to print out the sections I needed or just read the pages on my laptop. I purchased it along with the 900 Sample Test Guide. The book is not the most comfortable to carry around so the CD E-book that comes with it was a tremendous help. Also I really liked how the book is sectioned for each area of the HRCI BOK so you can pick the sections to focus on. I took the SPHR exam this month and passed so this book was worth the purchase.
I studied a solid 4 months. I used this as a secondary source.
I self-studed and relied primarily on PHR Exam Prep by Cathy Lee Gibson and then reviewed my weaker areas by reading specific chapters of PHR/SPHR Professional in Human Resources Certification Study Guide by Anne M. Bogardus.
I took the PHR last week and passed. Then I bought Gibson's book and was much more satisifed all around.However, I do think that Bogardus book provides good material.
I actually bought Bogardus' book first but found that it was written in a very boring manner. I was not particularly impressed with the format and chapter organization.
The book also comes with a great CD that provides practice exam questions.Good luck. they recommend at least 3 months of prep work.
I had purchased the SHRM Learning System and taken a class but if I had not purchased this book I would not have passed the PHR test.
This book helped me pass the PHR. It covered most of the material that was on my actual exam in 12/09. The CD was a great help in reviewing, too. The material has a few typos and topics not covered that were on the test, so I recommend combining it with other study aides.
