The book has good information but it doesn't explain things enough so that you will really understand it to answer questions. I just passed the PHR exam June 2009. The exam questions did NOT look like the assessment questions or chapter review questions in the book. However, I cannot completely credit this book with passing. Luckily my work had online tutorials that really helped me learn the concepts and terminology. I highly recommend that in addition to this book, you study out of at least another 2. Good luck.
I took the PHR exam today and passed primarily with the help of this book.I have no formal education in HR and no experience in the areas of risk management, strategic management, labor relations or benefits and compensation. This book has been completely updated to reflect the current laws and regulations and I was amazed at the level of detail it covered. The flashcards and the bonus exam contained in the accompanying cd are excellent revision tools. I strongly recommend this book as a primary and relatively inexpensive resource as compared to the SHRM learning system. From my experience, reading this book from cover to cover in addition to skimming through a couple of other resources and taking tests from online sources( [.].) will get you through with flying colors.
I used this book to study for the SPHR exam and found it to be very helpful. Using this book in conjunction with the SPHR prep tests from CertGear (strongly recommend you use this, as well) helped me to pass the SPHR on my first try. I have 9 years of HR experience, but in limited areas (non-profit, community mental health center with less than 50 employees) with degrees in psychology and business administration. The book very plainly spells out the SPHR bodies of knowledge and was a good way to prepare for this exam. What wasn't covered in the book was covered in CertGear. I would highly recommend the use of these two products as part of a comprehensive study program.
Excellent preparation for the exam. I passed and credit this guide with being a big help.
but just guideline, you need to go through more materials - books, on-line sources, etc.
